Around 2 years ago, I was interviewing a candidate for a postgraduate position. Bright person, solid undergraduate record, genuine enthusiasm for the research direction. The interview was going well until I asked about a tough question that sits at the edge of what most students at that stage would have covered, to be fair, it’s a hard question, but yeah, it’s an interview right.

The candidate paused, and then said something I honestly cannot remember, but somewhere along of they were familiar with the concept, gave a partial answer that circled the edges of the topic without landing anywhere specific, and then trailed off in a way that invited me to move on. So, you know, I don’t know to answer A, but B/C/D/E is kinda similar, so I try to answer these instead of touching A.

I moved on, because that is what you do in an interview. But well, I noted it.

Later that same day I interviewed someone else. Different background, slightly less polished CV, similar level of training. I asked a version of the same question. This person stopped, thought for a moment, and then said they had not worked with that particular method directly, but that based on what they did know about the underlying statistical framework, they would approach it by doing this, and then this, and they named the specific resources they would go to first and why. So yeah, they don’t know how to answer A, they do B, then C, then circle back and try to answer A. They were not performing confidence they did not have. They were showing me how they actually think.

That second candidate got the position, even tho honestly, the first one had the better CV.

The training that works against you

Science trains you to have answers. Not just answers, but it has to be the right answers (as well as the confidence to defend them). From your first undergraduate exam to your final thesis defense, Bsc or PhD, the structure of scientific education is built on the premise that knowing things is the point and not knowing them is a problem to solve privately.

This does not happen because educators are malicious. It simply happens because scientific training is genuinely difficult, and because the culture that developed around it absorbed the values of its most productive moments, which tend to be the moments of knowing rather than the moments of searching. The searching part, the confusion, the slow accumulation of understanding that eventually produces knowledge is invisible by design. What you see of other scientists is their output. Well, for most of the time, you very rarely see the hours of genuine not-knowing that preceded it.

The result is a working scientist who has been comprehensively trained to hide … uncertainty. Asking your supervisor for more feedback feels like admitting that the feedback you have received has not been sufficient. Asking a collaborator for more time feels like admitting you have not managed your time well. Asking a department head for resources feels like complaining about what you have been given. Well, you know exactly what I mean.

None of those interpretations is necessarily correct. But the training has installed them so deeply that most researchers feel them before they can examine them, and the practical consequence is that scientists routinely go without things they need, produce work that is worse than it could be, and carry an unnecessary weight of isolation.

I came to the conclusion that:

Asking is not weakness

The candidate who told me they did not know was not displaying ignorance. They were displaying intellectual method. Knowing what you do not know, and having a structured approach to finding out, is precisely what a scientist is supposed to do. It is the foundation of every research question ever asked. When I talk to students about this, I am direct. Not knowing and asking is a sign that you know what you are doing. It is the pretending to know that costs you, because it separates you from the information or guidance you actually need, and it does so invisibly, so nobody can help you with a gap they cannot see.

What makes this reframe difficult is not intellectual but cultural. In many educational environments, especially in parts of Asia and in any setting where academic hierarchy is strong, not knowing is socially penalised early and often. You learn before you are ten years old that a raised hand is a public admission of not having understood, and that the safe move is to stay quiet and figure it out later. By the time you are a doctoral candidate or a postdoc, that reflex is so deep it does not feel like a cultural artifact anymore.

A quick story shall we ?

Scarlett came home from school one afternoon and repeated something her teacher had said. “Being wrong is how you come to understand, the teacher had told the class, and the knowledge you draw from your own mistakes is the only knowledge that stays with you for life”

Honestly, it hits me like a truck! I sat there thinking I had spent twelve years in research before anyone said that to me directly. I had understood it in theory. But understanding something in theory and having someone communicate it in a way that makes it land directly in your head are two different things.

I told Scarlett her teacher was right, and that most scientists need to hear that more than primary school children do, because by the time you are doing research you have spent years being taught the opposite.

She thought about that for a moment and then asked what was for dinner. Oh dear…

What a good request actually looks like

The reason so many requests fail is not that asking is inherently problematic but that the requests themselves are structured in ways that make them hard to respond to. A vague request puts the burden on the other person to figure out what you actually need. An unanchored request, one with no context about why you are asking now, creates uncertainty about whether the request is reasonable. A request that mixes what you need with an apology for needing it muddies the message and often produces a response to the apology rather than to the actual ask.

A well-formed request has three things:

Khổ, người trẻ đi xin việc nhiều khi đã phải mang sẵn một đống áp lực trên vai, từ chuyện CV có đủ dày chưa, kinh nghiệm có đủ đẹp chưa, tiếng Anh có trơn tru chưa, portfolio có đủ ổn chưa, đến chuyện mình có đang đi chậm hơn người khác không, có đang đi sai đường không, thành ra chỉ cần gặp một câu nói kiểu chê chê thôi là lòng tự tin tắt luôn cái bụp… tắt xong thì khỏi dám deal lương luôn.

Well, nghịch lý ha, doanh nghiệp thì luôn muốn người giỏi, nhưng trả như người mới vào nghề; muốn trách nhiệm lớn, nhưng đãi ngộ thì …ermmmmm, tệ. Thành ra người trẻ đi xin việc nhiều khi không phải đang tìm một công việc mà y như là đang đi thương lượng xem mình sẽ bị đối xử như thế nào…. Và cũng hài hước, vì nhiều công ty như thể không muốn tìm người phù hợp, mà tìm người dễ điều khiển. Không cần phản biện, không cần hỏi nhiều, không cần biết mình đáng giá bao nhiêu. Chỉ cần vào được guồng quay, nhận việc, im lặng, rồi tự xoay như một chiếc compa, oke la.

Trẻ, rẻ & dễ vẽ là ở chỗ đó.

Mình thì nghĩ thế này, mình không nghĩ người trẻ cần bước vào thị trường lao động với thái độ ngây thơ kiểu “em chỉ cần cơ hội”. Đừng hiểu sai ý Tứng, cơ hội là quan trọng, nhưng giá trị của bạn cũng quan trọng không kém. Bạn không cần làm màu, nhưng cũng đừng tự hạ mình xuống thành người làm gì cũng được, miễn sao có chỗ làm… Ermmmm

Theo Tứng, cái bạn cần cân nhắc & giữ gìn là:

• Biết mình mang lại gì cho doanh nghiệp.

• Biết mình đang học gì từ doanh nghiệp.

• Biết mức nào là hợp lý, mức nào là … bóc lột trá hình.

• Và một chuyện là biết tự hỏi: “Ở đây, mình có được tôn trọng hay không?”

Người trẻ đi xin việc không cần phải bước vào đời với một tâm thế phô trương hay cứng ngắc. Mình cũng không nghĩ ai cần làm màu để chứng minh mình đáng giá. Nhưng cũng đừng tự co mình lại đến mức coi việc được nhận là đã may, được trả lương là đã mang ơn, được gọi đi phỏng vấn là đã là một dạng phước lành. Không phải vậy. Việc làm là một phần của quá trình trao đổi giá trị, chứ không phải một cuộc xin xỏ.

A younger colleague said something to me once that has stayed with me longer than most professional feedback I have received. We were at a local event in the middle of Melbourne, and after watching me talk to several people who had no research background, he pulled me aside and told me that I did not talk like a scientist. He added that if I put on a suit, I could probably pass for someone running a … pyramid scheme (LOL)

He seemed to mean it as a mild criticism. But on the other hand, I took it as one of the more useful observations anyone had offered me about communication. Why ? Because it hits something inside my mind.

The gap that I would like to discuss today, funnily enough, is not about knowing enough or having results significant enough to warrant explaining. It is about whether you can take something you have spent years understanding and explain it in plain language to another person, in less than a minute, in a way that makes them want to ask a follow-up question rather than change the subject.

That is what the elevator pitch is. It is not a sales technique, a networking trick, or something that requires a particular kind of extroverted personality. It is the most basic test of whether communication is actually happening, and it is the test that scientists, as a professional group, fail more consistently than almost any other kind of expert.

The pitch

The most common version of the elevator pitch that scientists produce is a compressed abstract, which is itself already a compression of a paper. What comes out is the thinnest possible distillation of a structure that was never designed for a live conversation. Someone asks what you work on, and you begin with the organism or the dataset, move through the method, mention the finding, and end somewhere in the middle of a technical sentence at the precise moment the other person has decided to look for an exit.

• An abstract is written for someone who chose to read it. They opened the PDF, scanned the title, decided it was worth their time, and gave you their attention before they read a single word.

• The elevator pitch is delivered to someone who asked a polite question. They did not ask for a presentation. They are perfectly capable of ending the exchange in the next ten seconds if you give them no reason to stay, and the background of the field is not a reason to stay. It is the signal that a … lecture is coming.

The abstract also begins in the wrong place for this purpose. It starts with what the field already knows, moves through the gap, then to the method, then to the finding. That sequence makes sense for a document being evaluated for its scientific contribution. For a few minutes conversation, starting with what the field knows is handing the other person context they did not request before you have given them any reason to want it. By the time you reach the part that might genuinely interest them, they have already made their decision.

Well, you know the decision was made in the first 20-30 seconds.

Start with the problem, not with what you did

The version that works begins with a problem the other person can recognise before you have explained anything technical. No, I’m not talking about a gap in the literature, neither a methodological challenge, I want a problem that connects to something a person with no scientific training can understand well enough to feel its weight without preparation.

If your work is about improving the accuracy of genomic predictions in livestock, the version that starts with those words loses most conversations immediately. The version that starts with the observation that a dairy farmer makes breeding decisions whose consequences play out over decades, and that the genetic information currently available leaves a lot of useful signal untouched, is a version that almost anyone can follow, because it gives the other person something to hold onto before you explain what you are doing about it.

The problem-first opening works because it tells the other person why they should listen before you tell them what you do. That ordering is the reverse of how scientists are trained to present their work, which is why it requires deliberate practice rather than instinct. Scientific training builds the habit of establishing technical context before making any claim, because that is what reviewers require and what journals reward. In a short duration conversation, the technical context is exactly the part that makes the other person’s attention drift.

Once you have the problem, stay with it longer than feels comfortable. Scientists tend to rush toward the science because the science is what they are proud of and feel qualified to explain. But the other person cannot care about the science until they care about the problem, and caring about a problem takes more than one sentence.

The specificity that makes the pitch work is specificity about the stakes, not specificity about the method. A sentence that names precisely what is at risk for a real person in a real situation is both specific and accessible. A sentence about what the pipeline does is specific only to people who already understand the pipeline. You do not have to choose between being precise and being understood, but you do have to choose what you are being precise about.

A structure that scales to infinity

The elevator pitch has a shape that stays useful when it expands into a five-minute dinner conversation. It has three main parts.

1. Hãy cố tìm cách học/đọc tài liệu chuyên ngành bằng tiếng Anh từ sớm

   Quá đơn giản, học chuyên ngành = tiếng Anh từ đầu giúp cải thiện vấn đề xử lý ngôn ngữ 2 lần. Sau này nghe GS/sếp nói chuyện sẽ hiểu concept đọc báo tốt (see how to read scientific paper here) + viết báo nhanh & thuận lợi.

2. Hỏi khi không hiểu (& ngay lập tức)

   Hãy hỏi khi bạn không hiểu, thà bạn hỏi trc, biết sai còn sửa đỡ tốn thời gian đi lung tung. Luôn luôn repeat lại để make sure mình hiểu đúng ý của GS/sếp. Easy as that.

3. Về chuyện xuất bản báo, hãy check uy tín tạp chí trước khi submit & major revision vẫn là kết quả tốt

   Báo chí thời này rất lung tung, nên xác định rõ mình đang nhắm vào đâu (Q ra sao, báo có phải predatory journal ko ?).

   Và khi bài bị major revision: nhớ rằng reviewer bỏ thời gian đọc kỹ paper của bạn là người đang giúp bạn. Reject luôn mới là thứ đáng để buồn !

4. Back up dữ liệu. Nhiều bản + nhiều chỗ khác nhau

   Mình hay dặn các bạn trẻ điều này. Và bản thân mình cũng làm vậy. Mất data là một việc vô cùng … ngu xuẩn, honestly. Don’t do that.

5. Hãy trung thực, nói KHÔNG với số liệu PHA KE, KHÔNG chỉnh sửa, can thiệp dưới mọi hình thức

   Khoa học phải được xây dựng trên sự thật. Điều này KHÔNG BAO GIỜ THAY ĐỔI. Gian lận trong nghiên cứu là một loại lừa đảo. Và một chuyện nữa cần phải nói là tiếng xấu thì đi rất xa đó nha :)

6. Hướng đi quan trọng hơn tốc độ

   Câu hỏi nghiên cứu sai thì chạy nhanh cỡ nào cũng đi lạc, vậy thôi (mà lạc ít ít còn đỡ, lạc nhiều là banh luôn cái PhD). Những nước đi ban đầu để tính toán là những nước đi vô cùng quan trọng, bạn hãy hỏi kỹ thầy cô, senior của mình để cho chắc .

7. Làm khoa học không nên đi một mình, hãy học cách network

   Khoa học, trong một khía cạnh nào đó, cũng giống như đi … bán nghiên cứu của bạn vậy, càng nhiều trong ngành người biết đến công trình của bạn thì càng tốt đó nhe. Tứng hay bảo rằng: "Be the guy who knows the guy". Nghe thì có vẻ thực dụng, nhưng mà nó đúng á vì lúc mình cần có người hỗ trợ được là một điều rất tốt.

8. Đừng so sánh bản thân mình với người khác

   Đừng đem chương 1 của mình so với chương 20-30 của người khác. So sánh nhẹ nhàng vui vẻ thì là một dạng động lực, nhưng so sánh quá đà thì là một loại thuốc độc, đầu độc chính bản thân chúng ta. Tặng bạn một câu quote mà Tứng rất ưng

9. Đừng dùng chỉ số, hãy tập trung vào impact

   Có rất nhiều chỉ số trong khoa học, h-index, citation count, impact factor... Nhưng với Tứng, những thứ đó không đo được impact thực sự của nghiên cứu. Nó không phản ánh được context, không phản ánh xu hướng của ngành. Đối với Tứng: nghiên cứu của bạn thay đổi điều gì, cho ai, cụ thể như thế nào mới là thứ quan trọng.

10. Làm khoa học không phải lúc nào cũng flashy, lúc nào cũng vui

    Thí nghiệm không ra, code sửa mãi không chạy, báo bị reject, grant không có, GS không duyệt. Những chuyện đó là một phần không vui (nhưng cũng không thể thiếu) của khoa học. Just think about the positive thing eh :)

I had been invited to give a talk at that conference, which I mention not to boast but because it makes what happened at the poster session harder to explain away. The talk had gone well, you know, I can see people had stayed for questions. And then I walked around the corner to where my poster was pinned up, and stood there for the remainder of the afternoon like a shopkeeper in an empty mall.

Familiar isn’t it :).

I had spent a few weeks designing that poster. I had rebuilt my figure four times so it fits the horizontal layout that I want. I had agonised over font size and colour palette and whether to include a supplementary schematic in the lower left corner. Researchers walked past without slowing down, most of them eyes forward, some of them glancing sideways for half a second and then looking away.

If you insist, this is the poster, in low quality obviously ;)

At the time I told myself the problem was the time slot, or the room layout, or the fact that the talk had already covered the same material. Looking back, the honest answer is that my poster was the problem. It was laid out like a compressed journal paper, with an abstract at the top, methods filling the left column, results across the middle, and discussion crammed into the lower right.

But othing important was visible from three meters away.

The three-meter rule

The most useful reframe for poster design starts not at the poster itself but at the question of what a person can perceive when standing three meters away and deciding whether to stop. At that distance, a person cannot read your methods. They cannot read your axis labels. They cannot read your abstract. What they can perceive is shape, colour, and text large enough to resolve into words.

If the only readable element at three meters is your title, your title has to do the entire job of convincing a stranger that walking closer is worth their time. Most scientific poster titles don’t do this job. They describe the study rather than naming the question, and they use terminology that is only meaningful to someone already inside the specialist community.

Let’s consider an example. A title like

tells an expert in exactly that area precisely what the study did. On the other hand, it tells almost everyone else approximately nothing.

A title that names the question instead of describing the study gives a stranger something to relate to before they’ve decided whether they care.

See, I agree this is longer, less formally correct, but it would far more likely to make someone walking past slow down, because it describes a situation and a consequence that a broader slice of that conference’s attendees can locate themselves in.

The three-meter rule is not about “dumbing down” your science. Don’t get me wrong. It’s about recognising that a poster session is a fundamentally different communication environment from the journal, and that the same information must be packaged differently for a person who is moving rather than sitting, glancing rather than reading, and deciding whether to invest attention rather than already having done so.

Visual, it’s always about visual

When you decide what is largest on your poster, you are deciding what you want the reader to encounter first. When you decide what is most visually prominent, you are deciding what carries the most argumentative weight. These decisions are not aesthetic choices layered on top of a scientific argument. They are the scientific argument, expressed through space and visual weight rather than through words.

A poster with no clear visual hierarchy communicates something to a visitor before they’ve read a single word, and what it communicates is that everything is equally important. That is the visual equivalent of an abstract that summarises everything equally which is another way of saying it prioritises nothing. The reader who encounters a visually flat poster has no entry point, no pathway through the material, and no obvious place to begin.

A well-structured poster gives a visitor a path to follow. The central question is the largest and most prominent element. The key finding is immediately adjacent and visually connected to the question, so that the relationship between them is clear without requiring a sentence to explain it. The evidence is presented through a single figure that carries its own conclusion rather than requiring a paragraph of caption to be interpretable. The methods are present but visually subordinate, somewhere a specialist can find them, but not interrupting the flow for someone who isn’t looking for that level of detail. Something like the below kinda works…

This is where poster design and data visualisation become the same skill. A figure that works in a poster is a figure that tells its conclusion without requiring the reader to read the caption. The visual encoding itself, think about the shape, colour, height, or position of the data elements communicates the finding so directly that a viewer who has never seen your data can look at it for five seconds and say what it shows.

That is a much harder standard to meet than a figure that is accurate and well-labelled. It requires thinking not just about what the data contains but about what the viewer will perceive when they look at it, which is a question about visual cognition, not just scientific content.

Oh, and please, use a very clear font. I put a link here, please read it. You can use whatever program, PowerPoint, Canva, or even Adobe Illustrator if you are fancy, the design is important.

Earlier this year I sat through an on-site seminar that left me genuinely unsettled. The funny thing is, I don’t like it not because the science was weak. It was quite the opposite, the researchers presenting were clearly… exceptional. You could hear it in the questions they fielded, in the offhand references to methodology that signalled years of accumulated expertise, in the moments when they clearly knew far more than they were saying. The science was indeed real, interesting, and mattered.

However, almost none of it reached my silly head.

Why ? Let me name a few things:

• The slides were dense columns of bullet points in ten pt font (10!).

• Figures appeared without orientation or narration.

• The presenters read from the screen in a flat voice while I squinted at text I could not parse, trying to decide whether to listen or read and succeeding at neither.

• The plots were… in neon green and blue.

By the end of the first part, I had retained a rough sense of the topic and almost nothing else.

I posted about it that night because I could not shake the feeling that something genuinely wasteful had happened. Hundreds of people had shown up to learn from researchers who had spent years becoming worth listening to, and the mechanism chosen to deliver that expertise had failed almost completely to transmit it. The responses confirmed what I suspected. Most researchers have sat in rooms like this, or stood in front of rooms like this, and many have done both.

The talk that lands nothing is not a rare event, and the bad thing is that it hurts more than you think.

The compressed paper problem

The mistake a scientist makes with a conference talk is treating it as a shorter version of their paper. This is understandable because the paper is what the talk is based on, and compressing it into fifteen minutes feels like an honest representation of the work.

Well, it is not.

A paper and a talk are different communication forms that operate on completely different assumptions about the reader, and importing the logic of one into the other is why so many conference talks fail.

• A paper is read by someone who chose it. They encountered the title, decided it was relevant, opened the PDF, and invested attention before they read a single word.

• A conference talk is heard by someone who sat down in a room. They might be in your immediate subfield or two disciplines away. They did not choose your talk so much as they chose the session, or the time slot, or they are simply there because the alternative was standing in a corridor. You have ~ 30 seconds up to a few minutes to give them a reason to follow your talk, no more.

The paper and the talk also end differently. A paper ends with a discussion that situates findings in a literature and identifies limitations, exactly right for a document a specialist reads carefully and critically. On the other hands, a talk ends with an audience either carrying one clear idea out of the room or carrying nothing. The structure of a paper builds toward completeness. The structure of a talk builds toward memorability. They are different destinations, and the road to each of them is also very different.

What a slide is actually for?

At some point in graduate training, often without anyone stating it explicitly, researchers absorb the idea that a slide should contain everything they are going to say. The slide then becomes a talk script (and sometimes a ... long-ass one). Every point the presenter intends to make appears on screen as text, and the presentation becomes an exercise in reading that text aloud while the audience also reads it silently, a few words ahead or behind. The two streams of information create interference rather than reinforcement.

Let me tell you something, a slide is a visual medium. It transmits information through image, layout, hierarchy, and space. When you fill it with paragraphs of text, you are using a visual medium to deliver a verbal experience, and the result is inferior to either a written document or a spoken presentation on its own. The audience cannot process two streams simultaneously. They have to pick one, and whichever one they pick, they lose the other.

The fix is not to remove all text. It is to understand what the slide is for and let that understanding govern every decision about what goes on it. My golden rule is

Figures are where this discipline matters most urgently. In a paper, a figure is documentation, it shows what was found with enough detail that a careful reader can evaluate the finding. In a talk, a figure is a statement, in a form that a person sitting ten meters from the screen can receive in under a minute. The figure you pull directly from your paper into your slide is almost always wrong for the talk. It usually has too many panels, too many conditions, too many labeled axes carrying information a paper reader needs but a talk audience cannot absorb at that scale and pace. Fun fact from me: What you can take advantage of, is adding some animations, and show some part of the figure each time, ease-of-digest, you know.

Redesigning a figure for the medium means asking not what does this data show but what do I want the audience to understand from looking at this figure and then checking whether the figure as designed delivers that understanding to someone seeing it for the first time (Tust me, most first designs fail this test).

A short list of mechanical failures appears in scientific slides so consistently that naming them is its own kind of instruction.

• Font size is the first: the practical floor for body text in a projected slide is twenty-four points, and anything below that is invisible from a reasonable distance. If your text at that size does not fit on the slide, you have too much text, not too small a font.

• Colour is the second: high contrast between text and background is a legibility requirement, not an aesthetic preference, and elaborate colour schemes that encode meaning across multiple categories create a decoding problem that competes with the content.

• Figures are the third: the one that took you three months to generate and that you can read in two seconds will sit on screen for thirty seconds in front of an audience that cannot locate the legend, cannot distinguish the colours at this resolution, and cannot find where to start reading.

Nghe quen ha? Đây là trải nghiệm của hầu hết người mới bắt đầu tiếp cận tài liệu khoa học. Tin tốt là người ta đã tạo ra cả một hệ sinh thái công cụ đang chờ bạn, và bạn chỉ cần biết dùng đúng thứ … đúng lúc. Tứng đã nhận rất nhiều tin nhắn hỏi của các bạn trên social media, nay múa bút viết một bài để tiện chia sẻ nha. Viết cho y/sinh/dược là chủ yếu, nhưng nói chung dùng được cả. Danh sách này chỉ là những thứ mà Tứng đã & đang xài, sẽ cập nhật thêm trong tương lai. Mấy cái AI này nọ cũng nhiều app lắm, nhưng Tứng sợ hallucinate nên vẫn dùng ít - vẫn sẽ giới thiệu thêm bên dưới nha.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar là điểm khởi hành lý tưởng vì nó quen thuộc, không cần tài khoản và bao phủ gần như mọi lĩnh vực. Thay vì gõ câu hỏi tự nhiên như “ung thư vú có di truyền ”, hãy nghĩ bằng từ khóa học thuật như “BRCA1 pathogenic variant penetrance”, hay “whole genome sequencing clinical utility” rồi thêm bộ lọc năm để ưu tiên bài mới trong 5 năm gần đây. Dưới mỗi kết quả sẽ có dòng chữ “Cited by X” cho bạn biết bài đó được cộng đồng khoa học chú ý đến mức nào, và bài nào cited càng nhiều thường càng đáng đọc, nhưng đừng bỏ qua bài mới chỉ vì nó ít citation vì bài mới ra thì chưa kịp được cite nhiều thôi.

Một tính năng ít người biết là Google Scholar Alerts: bạn vào scholar.google.com, tìm một từ khóa bất kỳ như “CRISPR off-target effects” hay “polygenic risk score”, rồi nhấn nút tạo Alert, và từ đó Google sẽ tự động gửi email về hòm thư của bạn mỗi khi có bài mới xuất bản liên quan đến chủ đề đó. Đây là cách cực kỳ tiện để theo dõi một lĩnh vực mà không cần phải nhớ vào tìm thủ công mỗi ngày. Tuy nhiên, cá nhân Tứng thấy nó phân loại cũng … nhiều trash lắm.

PubMed cho y sinh học

Nếu chủ đề liên quan đến y tế, dược phẩm hay sinh học, PubMed là kho tàng không thể bỏ qua vì đây là cơ sở dữ liệu do Thư viện Y khoa Quốc gia Mỹ quản lý với hơn 40 chục chẹo bài viết đã được index kỹ lưỡng. Bài vở thì nhiều vô biên như biển luôn. Điểm mạnh của PubMed là bộ lọc rất chi tiết: lọc theo loại nghiên cứu như clinical trial, review hay meta-analysis, lọc theo tuổi bệnh nhân, thậm chí theo giới tính. Ví dụ bạn đang tìm hiểu về ứng dụng whole exome sequencing trong chẩn đoán bệnh hiếm gặp ở trẻ em thì chỉ cần gõ “whole exome sequencing rare disease pediatric”, lọc “Clinical Trial” và “last 3 years” là ra ngay những bài liên quan nhất. Nếu bài có nhãn “Free PMC Article” thì tải ngay miễn phí; còn nếu không thì hãy lấy mã DOI để screen tiếp nhe.

Các cách vượt paywall

Giờ bài có paywall, tính sao ơi ? 3 cách nhe:

1 - Tham gia vào các nhóm tải báo, gửi DOI cho các bạn, sẽ có bạn lấy bài về và send.

2 - Một phương án bạn có thể làm là copy DOI, dán vào thanh tìm kiếm của một Sci-Hub mirror đang hoạt động và tải PDF về. Extension Unpaywall trên trình duyệt tự động tìm bản open-access hợp pháp của bài đang xem ngay lập tức mà không cần làm gì thêm. Dạo gần đây còn có cả SciHub AI, Tứng chưa thử nhưng nghe nói cũng cháy lắm.

3 - Một cách khác ít người biết nhưng hiệu quả đến bất ngờ là liên hệ trực tiếp với tác giả. Nhà khoa học nào cũng muốn bài mình được đọc nhiều hơn, nên hầu hết sẽ vui lòng gửi bản PDF nếu bạn email hỏi lịch sự. Tìm email tác giả trong phần “Correspondence” của bài báo hoặc trên trang ResearchGate/LinkedIn/Twitter của họ, rồi gửi một message hay email ngắn kiểu

Đơn giản vậy thôi mà tỉ lệ reply khá cao nhe ;). Cá nhân Tứng chưa miss lần nào.

Web of Science và Scopus

Nếu Google Scholar giống như một thư viện mở cửa tự do thì Web of Science (WoS) và Scopus giống như khu đọc sách VIP, nơi chỉ có tài liệu đã qua kiểm duyệt gắt gao mới được vào, và đây là hai cơ sở dữ liệu lớn nhất thế giới về tạp chí khoa học, hội nghị và sách học thuật. Cả hai đều cần tài khoản trường/viện để truy cập đầy đủ, và bạn dùng chúng chủ yếu để kiểm tra xem một tạp chí có uy tín không trước khi tin tưởng một bài báo cũng như để tra cứu hồ sơ trích dẫn của tác giả. Này chắc cần cả một bài viết riêng để nói vì 2 quỷ này mạnh, nhưng lại tốn $$$$$

bioRxiv và X để bắt nhịp nghiên cứu mới nhất

Bài báo qua peer-review đôi khi mất 1 đến 2 năm mới được xuất bản, và nếu bạn muốn đọc nghiên cứu nóng hổi trước cả khi nó ra tạp chí thì bioRxiv là nơi để đến vì đây là máy chủ preprint dành cho khoa học sự sống, nơi các tác giả đăng tải bản thảo ngay sau khi hoàn thành mà chưa qua vòng bình duyệt chính thức. Trong genomics, hầu hết các bài về phân tích biến thể toàn hệ gen (GWAS), single-cell sequencing hay phát triển pipeline tin sinh học đều xuất hiện trên bioRxiv nhiều tháng trước khi được tạp chí chấp nhận. Trong y học còn có medRxiv chuyên về sức khỏe và dịch tễ học ra mắt năm 2019. Cần lưu ý là preprint chưa được peer-review nên cần đọc với tinh thần phản biện cao hơn bình thường.

Chỗ X (Twitter cũ) phát huy tác dụng là ở đây vì cộng đồng nghiên cứu trên X cực kỳ sôi động với một thói quen đặc trưng là vừa đăng preprint lên bioRxiv là tác giả tweet ngay một thread giải thích kết quả bằng ngôn ngữ đời thường kèm hình ảnh trực quan. Ví dụ điển hình là các nhóm genomics lớn như Broad Institute hay Wellcome Sanger Institute thường tweet thread chi tiết ngay khi ra preprint mới về phân tích đa quần thể hay phát hiện variant mới liên quan đến bệnh. Tài khoản @biorxivpreprint đăng tóm tắt tự động theo từng lĩnh vực, nhưng cách hiệu quả hơn là follow trực tiếp các nhà khoa học trong lĩnh vực bạn quan tâm vì một thread tweet từ tác giả thường giúp bạn nắm ý chính của một bài báo nhanh hơn nhiều so với đọc Abstract. Bắt đầu bằng cách search hashtag như #genomics, #singlecell hay #GWAS trên X là ra ngay một đống account đáng follow.

Kỹ thuật Citation Chaining

Đây là kỹ năng biến một bài báo tốt thành cả một thư viện = các liên kết chặt chẽ. Ngắn gọn citation chaining link 2 chiều của bài báo lại với nhau (xem hình dưới.

Backward chaining là xem danh sách tài liệu tham khảo ở cuối bài, và bài nào xuất hiện nhiều lần hoặc được trích dẫn bởi nhiều tác giả khác nhau thường là bài kinh điển của lĩnh vực đó mà bạn nên đọc trước để hiểu nền tảng lý thuyết, ví dụ như khi đọc bất kỳ bài nào về CRISPR bạn sẽ thấy bài gốc của Jennifer Doudna và Emmanuelle Charpentier năm 2012 xuất hiện gần như khắp nơi.

Forward chaining là nhấn “Cited by X” trên Google Scholar để xem ai đã trích dẫn bài đó về sau, đây là cách tìm nghiên cứu mới nhất đang kế thừa hoặc phản bác kết quả cũ và thường dẫn bạn đến những hướng nghiên cứu bạn chưa nghĩ đến. Bắt đầu từ một bài review chất lượng trong lĩnh vực bạn quan tâm, leo theo hai chiều này, và chỉ sau vài tiếng bạn sẽ vẽ được bản đồ của cả một chủ đề nghiên cứu.

Bộ công cụ bổ trợ đáng để cân nhắc

Ngoài các bước trên, có thêm vài địa chỉ hữu ích mà nhiều người hay bỏ qua:

• Semantic Scholar: tìm kiếm có hỗ trợ AI và hiển thị citation graph trực quan, rất tiện để thấy một bài kết nối với những bài nào khác trong cùng lĩnh vực

• ResearchGate: tác giả thường tự đăng bản preprint hoặc PDF miễn phí tại đây, và đây cũng là nơi bạn có thể nhắn tin hỏi tác giả trực tiếp

• Connected Papers: nhập DOI bất kỳ và công cụ sẽ vẽ ngay một đồ thị trực quan các bài liên quan, cực kỳ hữu ích khi bắt đầu review một lĩnh vực mới hoàn toàn

• SCImago Journal Rank: tra xếp hạng Q1/Q2/Q3/Q4 của bất kỳ tạp chí nào, hoàn toàn miễn phí

Khi đã có đủ công cụ, thách thức thực sự không còn là tìm thấy tài liệu nữa rồi, vì vấn đề nằm ở chỗ khi nào nên dừng tìm tài liệu =))))))))))). Không ít người sa vào vòng lặp đọc mãi mà chưa bắt đầu viết. Tứng bị rồi, bạn đã từng rơi vào chưa? 😄

A few years ago, I finished what I thought was one of my best papers yet, it was sharp, the method was nice & fancy, the discussion well-argued, and honestly? I was proud of it. I hit submit with quiet confidence. The response came back swiftly within ONE months: two reviewers, one decision.

Major revisions, with the editor already leaning toward rejection.

Reviewer one had clearly read the paper carefully and raised three concerns that were legitimate, specific, and useful. Reviewer two had apparently read a different paper entirely. Their first comment misidentified our primary outcome. Their second comment requested a differentcondition that was not just missing from our study but was incompatible with our study design, and asking us to add it would have required us to run a different experiment altogether. Their third comment critic our method while citing a body of literature from an adjacent field that I personally don’t think related to whatever we were working in.

I closed the laptop and went for a walk.

When I came back, I did what most scientists do in that moment. I started drafting a response that explained, in escalating levels of detail, exactly why reviewer two was wrong. The response I wrote in that first hour was technically accurate and professionally ruinous. It was defensive in every paragraph, sarcastic in a few places that I told myself were actually just direct, and completely useless as a strategic document. It would not have helped the paper. It would have confirmed to the editor that this author was difficult to work with, and it would have sent the manuscript toward rejection faster than the problematic review itself.

FYI, I did not send that version. But I did not delete it either, and somewhere around the third paragraph my daughter Scarlett walked into the room, glanced at the screen, and asked what I was writing. I told her someone had said something unfair about my work and I was explaining why they were wrong. She thought about it for a moment and then said, with the complete calm of a person who has not yet learned to overcomplicate things:

She was not offering advice, just asking a question. But the question landed somewhere I hadn’t expected, because the honest answer was that I didn’t need to be. The wrongness didn’t require my anger to be true. It would still be wrong in a quieter sentence.

I closed that draft, opened a new document and started again.

Peer review, well, everything is about peer review

Science training prepares you for a great many things. It prepares you to design experiments, to analyse data under uncertainty, to defend a methodological choice in front of an expert committee, and to revise a manuscript in response to feedback that is specific and actionable. What it does not prepare you for is the emotional reality of structured, repeated rejection.

The particular kind of rejection that comes with peer review is one of the more psychologically complex varieties on offer. You are receiving a judgment on work you may have spent years on, written by a person whose identity you do not know, who was not chosen by you, who may or may not have the relevant expertise, and whose comments you are nevertheless obligated to address if you want the paper published. You cannot ask for clarification before you respond. You cannot assess the reviewer’s qualifications. You cannot choose a different reviewer the way you might choose a different colleague to consult.

Peer review is a highly variable process that produces everything from genuinely transformative critique to comments that would embarrass a first-year student. The working scientist learns, often slowly and without much guidance, to receive both kinds of feedback with the same outward equanimity. Nobody teaches this skill, nobody sits you down and explains that the majority of your professional career will involve some form of being told no, and that learning to respond to that no without losing either your scientific integrity or your professional composure is a skill you will use more than almost any other.

Understanding what really is a rebuttal letter ?

The most important reframe in this chapter is one that sounds simple but changes everything about how you approach the process. A rebuttal letter is not a defence, IT NEVER IS. I consider a rebuttal letter as a persuasion document.

You are not trying to prove that you are right, and the reviewer is wrong (even when you are right and the reviewer is wrong LOL). You are trying to persuade the editor to send the revised manuscript to publication. The editor is your actual audience. The reviewer is a voice in the room that you need to manage, but the editor is the person whose confidence you are trying to earn and keep. Every decision you make in the rebuttal letter should be made with that distinction in mind.

This reframe has practical consequences. Even when reviewer two is wrong, your job is not to expose that wrongness in the most complete and undeniable terms available. Your job is to correct the record in a way that makes the editor confident that the paper is scientifically sound and that the author is someone worth working with. Those are related & they serve different goals. Achieving the first by humiliating the reviewer achieves the second only if the editor has no interest in maintaining a functional review system (well, which is unlikely)

The three types of reviews

Not all critical feedback deserves the same response, and learning to categorise reviews accurately before you start writing is one of the highest-leverage habits you can develop as a working scientist.

1. The genuinely helpful critique arrives when a reviewer has read carefully, identified a real gap or weakness in your argument, and articulated it in a way you can act on. This is the version of peer review the system was designed to produce, and also, in my experience, the least common of the three types. When you receive it, the response is substantive and direct. You describe what the reviewer raised, explain what change you made and why it improves the paper, and thank the reviewer in language that is genuine rather than formulaic. The only trap here is overclaiming in your response (and guess what, editors know what overclaiming looks like)

2. The review outside the reviewer’s expertise is more delicate than it first appears. The reviewer is not being malicious. They were assigned a paper that pushed against the edges of what they know, and their comments reflect that mismatch. The language pattern that works here validates the underlying concern while reorienting it toward the correct disciplinary context. Something like “Reviewer two raises a question about our choice of threshold, which reflects a convention that differs between the literature, and the genomics approaches our study draws from” allows you to correct the record while treating the reviewer as someone working from a different but legitimate framework. You are not agreeing with them. You are explaining, to the editor’s satisfaction, why the critique does not apply.

3. The review that is simply wrong requires the most careful handling, because the temptation to be definitive is highest when you know with most confidence that you are correct. A reviewer who misidentifies your outcome variable has made a factual error that needs to be corrected, but the correction does not need to carry additional weight. State what your outcome variable was, point to the section where it was defined, indicate whether any clarification has been added in the revision, and move on. The tone is informative rather than corrective. Long explanations in this situation often read as defensiveness even when the underlying argument is airtight. Brevity here is a form of confidence.

In my 10+ years doing research, I have received hundreds, if not thousands of emails from researchers. Inquiries about PhD positions, requests for collaboration, questions about methods, cold introductions from people whose work I had never encountered. After a while I start to stop noticing the good ones consciously and start noticing only what they have in common: they are short, they are specific, and within the first two sentences you know exactly what the person needs.

The ones that don’t get a reply have a different pattern. They (usually) are long. The actual question is somewhere in the middle. And by the time you reach it, you have already lost the thread of why you opened the email in the first place.

So, the question here is

The email is not the essay, it never was

Scientists are trained to be thorough. Thoroughness in a methods section is a virtue. Thoroughness in a grant application signals you have thought through the implications. But thoroughness in an email to a senior researcher who received forty messages before yours is a fast way to ensure your email gets skimmed, partially misread, and filed in the category of things to come back to which is another way of making sure it disappears.

The email != scientific paper. It is not the place to establish all your credibility, anticipate every possible misreading, and demonstrate the full range of what you know. It is a single, purposeful act of communication with a clear direction and a clear request. Every word that does not serve that request is simply … working against you, unfortunately.

Most researchers who struggle with email length are not struggling because they have too much to say. They are struggling because they have not figured out what the point of the email is. When the point is unclear to the writer, the email expands to cover all possible versions of what the point might be, and the reader has to do the interpretive work the writer avoided. Busy people do not do that interpretive work. They read the first two sentences, sense that this will require effort, and set it aside.

The first discipline of email writing is deciding, before you write a single word, what one thing you need the other person to do. Not what you want them to know about you, and not what you want them to think of you, but the specific action you are asking for. If you cannot state that in one sentence, you are not ready to write the email yet.

Credibility without credentials

Compare these two approaches. The first is what most cold emails actually look like:

Both sit inside the same email, but the second tells the reader something the first cannot: that this person has been working with real data, hit a real limitation, and traced that limitation forward to a specific question about your specific work. They did not search for labs working on cattle genomics and fire off a template. They followed a thread from their own problem to yours. That kind of specificity cannot be faked.

I was talking to a colleague once about a senior researcher in our field whose work on structural variant calling was directly relevant to what we were both doing. It was one of those conversations that happens over a video call at the end of a long day, the kind that starts as something else and turns into the thing you actually needed to talk about. My colleague had been meaning to reach out for months. He kept finding reasons not to send it, but at that moment, he decided to share his screen and showed me the draft.

Four paragraphs. There was a long opening about his background, a paragraph on his current project, a paragraph explaining why he found the other researcher’s work interesting, and then in the third paragraph, halfway through a sentence, there lies the actual question he had been carrying around for months.

I asked him what he needed the person to do after reading it. He said he needed an answer to that specific question. I asked why the other three paragraphs were there. He said he didn’t want to seem presumptuous. He wanted to show he’d done the work, that he wasn’t just showing up empty-handed.

I understood that. I had written the same email, in different forms, more times than I could count. The instinct to justify your presence before making a request feels like courtesy. However, the fact is that in an email to someone with forty other messages waiting, it is the opposite. After that, I told him to cut everything except the question, add one sentence explaining why he was asking this specific person, and send it.

He looked at the three lines left on the screen. He said it felt naked. I told him it felt like it respected the other person’s time, which is the closest thing to warmth that a cold email can offer. He closed his eyes for a second, the way people do when they are about to do something that makes them uncomfortable, and hit send.

I close up shop and decide to have dinner, Mochi had been asleep on the couch through my entire side of this conversation which he is not supposed to be on and chose this exact moment to stand up, turn in a small circle, and lie back down in the same position. Well, it really added nothing to the situation. It was also, I thought, a reasonable editorial comment on how long we had taken to get there.

And guess what, my colleague had a reply the next morning.

The ask that can actually be answered

After excessive length, another failure mode that I want to touch on is the ask that is too broad to act on. Emails that end with

or

land in a senior researcher’s inbox as gestures rather than requests. They require the other person to figure out what the collaboration would involve, what thoughts would be useful, and what the concrete next step should be. Well, that work rarely gets done.

The ask has to be narrow enough that the other person can evaluate and respond to it in a few minutes. A good ask has a visible shape. Notice how this closing works:

There are two asks here, stacked deliberately. The first is a yes-or-no question that takes ten seconds to answer. The second is a bounded request, specifically twenty minutes, a specific topic, a named purpose. The recipient knows exactly what they are being asked to do, exactly how long it will take, and exactly what the conversation will be about. There is no interpretation required. The only decision they have to make is whether they have the time and the open position.

That is your job before you hit send: remove every decision from the reader except the one you actually need them to make.

Bởi vì mỗi ngành hẹp, Bovine genomics như Tứng đang làm chẳng hạn, là lĩnh vực đặc biệt ở chỗ mỗi nhóm nghiên cứu đang giải quyết những câu hỏi rất khác nhau, từ việc xác định các biến thể di truyền liên quan đến năng suất sữa và khả năng kháng bệnh, đến việc phân tích cấu trúc quần thể giữa các giống bò bản địa và giống nhập khẩu, hay xây dựng reference panel cho genotype imputation dựa trên dữ liệu long-read sequencing để phát hiện structural variant mà short-read đơn giản là bỏ sót, và sự khác biệt đó chính là cơ hội để bạn viết một email mà không ai khác có thể copy-paste.

Nói đơn giản, bạn phải kiếm một cái “góc” mà bạn & GS giao với nhau, từ đó mới build up email. Còn nếu không giao nhau thì, honestly, khó nhe :)

Cấu trúc nên có của một email

Khi Tứng công bố nghiên cứu về imputation và structural variant trong genome bò, Tứng không chỉ đơn thuần là làm nghiên cứu về bò, mà đang trả lời một câu hỏi rất cụ thể về những gì short-read sequencing không thể nhìn thấy trong kiến trúc di truyền của các giống bò, và nếu bạn là sinh viên đã có nền tảng với Illumina pipeline nhưng muốn hiểu tại sao short-read có giới hạn trong việc phát hiện structural variant, thì đó chính xác là điểm xuất phát để viết một email khác hoàn toàn với những gì Tứng nhận mỗi ngày.

Câu mở đầu không cần phải hoa mỹ, chỉ cần nói rõ bạn đang ở đâu, đang làm gì, và đang ở giai đoạn nào trong hành trình nghiên cứu của mình, chẳng hạn như “Em là sinh viên năm cuối ngành Di truyền và Chọn giống, đang hoàn thiện luận văn về GWAS cho tính trạng sinh sản ở bò Holstein sử dụng dữ liệu 50K SNP chip”, ví dụ vậy. Nếu chưa làm thì sao Tứng ơi ? Thì tải data về tự vọc vạch một chút đi nhỉ :).

Câu tiếp theo là nơi bạn chứng minh rằng bạn thực sự đọc công trình của họ, bằng cách dẫn đến một bài báo cụ thể và nêu đúng điều khiến bạn tò mò, ví dụ như “Em đọc nghiên cứu của Tứng về imputation trong quần thể bò sữa và nhận ra rằng nếu reference panel được xây dựng từ dữ liệu long-read thay vì short-read, độ chính xác imputation cho các vùng có structural variant có thể được cải thiện đáng kể.”

Phần giữa email nên chứa đúng một câu hỏi, được đặt ra đủ hẹp để người nhận có thể trả lời trong vài phút, chẳng hạn như hỏi thẳng liệu lab còn chỗ cho nghiên cứu sinh mới bắt đầu vào đầu năm tới không, hoặc nhóm nghiên cứu hiện đang sử dụng công cụ nào để phát hiện structural variant từ dữ liệu PacBio hay Oxford Nanopore trong genome bò.

Câu kết không nên là lời chào lịch sự chung chung mà nên là một đề xuất hành động cụ thể, chẳng hạn như “Tứng có thể dành 20 phút trao đổi qua Zoom vào tuần tới để em trình bày ngắn về hướng nghiên cứu hiện tại và hỏi thêm về cách nhóm thầy xây dựng reference panel cho imputation có cả SNP + SV không?”, vì một câu hỏi như vậy vừa thể hiện sự chuẩn bị nghiêm túc, vừa giúp người nhận biết chính xác bước tiếp theo mà không cần suy nghĩ thêm.

Toàn bộ email nên đọc xong trong < 5 mins. Ngắn gọn, xúc tích, không quá 1 trang A4 (thậm chí nửa trang thôi cũng đủ)…. Vì cái key ở đây là cụ thể & chạm đúng chỗ. GS họ ko có nhiều thời gian để bạn múa máy tay chân đâu =))

I have a memory from early in my career that I return to more than I should. This was after I finished my PhD at Uni of the Sunshine Coast. After some discussion with my supervisor, I had spent six weeks writing a grant proposal for a project I believed in, a computational approach to a problem in lobster transcriptomics using spatial technologies I thought were both original and timely (well, in 2019, scRNAseq is still relatively new and spatial was uncharted territory). The science was sound and the methods were well thought through. I was sure I knew the literature, I had (some) preliminary data, and I had written the technical sections with a level of care that, in retrospect, I reserved almost entirely for reviewers and almost never for readers.

The result ? That proposal was never funded, and I left the position and chased up dairy cattle at AgVic soon afterward.

The feedback, when it arrived back then, was brief and somewhat sad to me. The reviewer noted that the scientific rationale was well developed but that the significance of the problem was not adequately established for a non-specialist reader. I remember reading that sentence several times, feeling a mixture of irritation and confusion. I had written three pages on why the problem mattered, put in the proposal so many related papers. I had included a figure showing the potential impact of the study. I had explained the significance (well, I think).

What I had not done, many years later, was to make the funder want to solve the problem before I asked them to fund how I would solve it. Most proposals make that same mistake and go straight to the transaction without doing the persuasion first.

The myth of the proposal

Well, first of all, if you absolutely don’t know what I’m talking about. I encourage you to read Research Rabbit on How to write a research proposal. I found the below image quite nice to memorize.

There is a belief among scientists, held with varying degrees of consciousness, that a rigorous proposal will be self-evidently worth funding. If the question is important and the methodology sound, any reasonable panel should see the value and fund it.

This belief is, well, wrong because it misunderstands what a grant proposal is. A proposal is not asking a panel to evaluate a piece of science. It is asking a panel of tired, expert-but-not-quite-expert-in-your-area (pun intended) people to make a bet on whether your work is worth more than the other twenty-three proposals sitting in the same pile, which means grant proposals are communication problems before they are scientific ones.

The technical detail you include in your methodology section cannot do the work of persuasion on its own, because persuasion requires that the person you are trying to persuade first cares about what you are trying to achieve. A panel member who is not yet convinced your problem is worth solving will read your methods section as a bureaucratic requirement to process rather than as evidence of your competence.

The 4 tensions nobody tells you about

Choosing a research question, for most working scientists, involves navigating four competing “forces” at once. Pretending those forces do not exist does not make them go away, which means you navigate them poorly while telling yourself you are following your intellectual curiosity.

• The first one is what you want to investigate, the question that keeps you at your desk past the time you meant to leave, the problem you find yourself thinking about in the shower. It is real and it matters, and any proposal disconnected from it will show that disconnection in every paragraph.

• The second one is what is likely to attract funding from the bodies offering it right now. Funding priorities shift (AI & robotics are being mindlessly funded at the moment, for example). Government investment cycles change. What was fundable five years ago may be unfundable now. Ignoring this force will make you broke.

• The third one is what your supervisor, lab, or institution needs the research to produce, whether a specific output type, a paper in a particular journal, a dataset that feeds a larger collaborative project, or a result that justifies equipment the department has already purchased. This force is often the least discussed and the most powerful, because it operates through the relationship rather than through explicit instruction.

• The fourth one is time, meaning whether a paper, dataset, or meaningful result can emerge before your scholarship ends, your contract expires, or the funding period closes. This force is invisible to most proposal frameworks and central to how working scientists make decisions about what to pursue.

I posted about these four forces on Threads once a while ago and the replies ran for days. Researchers at every career stage describing the same tension, many of them saying nobody had ever named it. The version of research where someone follows pure intellectual curiosity uncontaminated by any of these pressures is a story told about science, not one that describes how most science happens. Junior researchers believe it until they discover it is a fiction, at some cost to themselves.

The scientists who navigate these tensions best are the ones who acknowledge them, map them against each other, and find the real intersection where what they care about, what is fundable, what the lab needs, and what is achievable in time overlap. That intersection exists more often than it might seem, and finding it requires some degree of understanding (and luck at the same time).

And then, once you have found it, you need to write a proposal that makes a panel feel the same way about your question that you do.

A few years into my research career I published a paper I was genuinely proud of. Solid science, rigorous methods, interesting results, a reasonable journal. Months of works on it, revised twice after review, and I felt the particular relief that comes when something finally clears the system and gets a DOI attached to it.

Then I watched it sit there.

A handful of citations in the first year, most from my own group. No emails from other labs asking about the data. No follow-up questions at conferences. The work back then was in animal genomics (prawn/lobster to be precise), a field with no shortage of active researchers and active citation trails, and my paper sat inside it like a piece of furniture in a room nobody entered. I checked occasionally (more often than I would admit) and found the citation number unchanged.

You know, I was taught citations equal impact.

I told myself the usual things. The field is crowded, the right people had not found it yet, it takes time for a paper to build citations. Some of that was probably true. But looking back now, I think the more honest answer is simpler and harder to sit with.

I had written that paper for the ... wrong person.

Writing for the reviewer is a trap

The peer review system shapes scientific writing in ways that most researchers never fully examine. When you know your work will be evaluated by anonymous experts before it can be published, you start writing toward their concerns rather than your reader’s needs. You circle around where you might otherwise be direct. You load the methods section with procedural detail that proves you know what you are doing rather than detail that helps someone replicate your work. You cite extensively not because those citations build an argument but because leaving them out might look like ignorance.

None of this is wrong. Getting through peer review is a real constraint. But a paper written primarily for a reviewer is a paper written for someone who is paid to find problems with it, who represents a narrow slice of the field’s expertise, and who will read it once and never return.

That is a very different person from the postdoc in another country who stumbles across your paper at midnight, is trying to figure out whether your approach would work for her data, and needs to understand your core finding in ten minutes or less.

The postdoc is your actual reader. The reviewer is the gatekeeper. Conflating the two is the original sin of scientific writing.

Ask three questions before you submit

Early in my career I developed a habit that came less from strategy and more from frustration with my own work. Before choosing where to submit a paper, I started asking myself three questions.

Who will actually read this paper? Not who could theoretically read it, or who falls within the journal’s stated scope, but who is likely to encounter it, open it, and spend time with it. If you cannot name a type of reader concretely, you probably do not know your audience yet.

Who will use the results? A clinician might read a paper to stay informed but rely on systematic reviews before changing practice. A field ecologist might use your genetic data directly in their next study. A policy analyst might extract one number and cite it in a report that reaches ten thousand people who never see your paper. Knowing who will use your results tells you which parts deserve the most clarity, because those are the parts that travel.

Does this work have any realistic chance of changing how someone does something? This is the hardest question to answer honestly, because the honest answer is sometimes no. But asking it forces useful thinking. If yes, make the pathway from finding to application as clear as possible. If the answer is maybe, understand what would need to be true for someone to change their practice, and write toward that.

I shared these questions on social media once, framing them as my filter for journal selection. The response was not what I expected. Researchers at every career stage said the questions named something they had felt but never been able to articulate. What they described, in case after case, was the gap between doing careful work and having that work actually reach people. Several said they had published papers they were proud of that seemed to disappear, and that asking the questions helped them understand why.

The framework is not complicated. But it requires standing in a different place when you think about your own writing.

Trước tiên hết. Errmmmm, Networking là gì?

Networking đơn giản là sự mở rộng các mối quan hệ trong cuộc sống, cả trong công việc lẫn đời thường. Điều thú vị là bạn vẫn đang networking mỗi ngày mà đôi khi không nhận ra: mỗi lần giúp đồng nghiệp xử lý một đoạn dữ liệu khó, mỗi lần hỏi thăm thầy hướng dẫn sau một bài seminar, hay mỗi lần bình luận một câu dưới bài đăng của ai đó trên LinkedIn, X, ResearchGate, tất cả đều là networking nhe. Tuy nhiên, trong khoa học, kỹ năng này lại thường bị bỏ ngỏ. Một phần vì không ít nhà khoa học vẫn thích “lầm lũi” trong phòng lab hơn là tham gia hội thảo hay gia nhập các consortium lớn.

Thế này, Networking mở ra rất nhiều cánh cửa mà năng lực đơn thuần không giải quyết đc. Trong bối cảnh publish or perish lên ngôi như hiện nay (not a good thing honestly, but that’s the game…), khi các công trình khoa học ngày càng cần sự cộng tác từ nhiều nhóm nghiên cứu để nâng cao chất lượng, mạng lưới quan hệ chính là tài sản dài hạn. Nếu bạn có quan hệ tốt với các giáo sư, chuyên gia hay các nghiên cứu sinh khác, bạn sẽ dễ dàng hơn khi xin references cho CV, tiếp cận các học bổng chưa được đăng công khai, và thậm chí được chủ động mời tham gia dự án khi một nhóm nghiên cứu đang thiếu người.

Học bổng “In-house”

Đây là điều ít người nhắc đến nhưng lại rất …thực tế. Khi một giáo sư cần tuyển nghiên cứu sinh, dù vị trí được đăng công khai theo quy định, vị giáo sư đó thường đã có trong đầu một vài ứng viên tiềm năng từ trước. Hồ sơ từ khắp nơi trên thế giới đổ về, nhưng “quân xanh” mà giáo sư đã để mắt từ một lần tiếp chuyện tại hội thảo, hay được giới thiệu qua đồng nghiệp tin cậy, lại có lợi thế xuất phát không thể phủ nhận. Tất nhiên vẫn có rất nhiều bạn tự thân vận động xin được học bổng đường đường chính chính, nhưng nếu có thêm một lợi thế như vậy thì càng tốt, phải không?

Cách xây dựng mạng lưới của bản thân - không, Tứng ko kêu bạn đi bán hàng đa cấp !!!

Bạn không cần hội nghị quốc tế để bắt đầu. Networking có thể được xây dựng song song trên ba mặt trận:

• Ngay tại nơi làm việc hiện tại: Luôn nhiệt tình, làm việc hết mình với mọi tác vụ được giao. Người tốt luôn được nhớ đến và được recommend. Việc giúp đỡ các đồng nghiệp trong lab, dù họ đang làm tiến sĩ trong khi bạn chỉ ở bậc thạc sĩ, có thể dẫn đến cơ hội được đứng tên chung trên các bài báo khoa học. Điều này không chỉ tốt cho hồ sơ mà còn giúp người khác thấy được năng lực thực sự của bạn qua công việc.

• Trên nền tảng số: LinkedIn cho mục tiêu tuyển dụng và xây dựng thương hiệu cá nhân; ResearchGate để upload bài báo, theo dõi các nhà nghiên cứu cùng hướng và tăng độ hiển thị cho công trình của mình, kể cả khi bài chưa được đăng trên các tạp chí Open Access; Academia.edu để mở rộng khả năng tiếp cận với cộng đồng học thuật quốc tế. X/BlueSky/Mastodon cũng là những channel có nội dung khoa học khá thú vị. Ngoài ra, nhiều nhà nghiên cứu còn duy trì một blog cá nhân để chia sẻ hành trình nghiên cứu, một cách xây dựng thương hiệu cá nhân hiệu quả và bền vững theo thời gian. Tứng cũng từng có một blog cá nhân, mà giờ bỏ rồi :D

  

• Thông qua các sự kiện: Tham gia conferences, trình bày poster hoặc làm speaker nếu có thể. Với sinh viên đang ở giảng đường, hãy đăng ký làm volunteer tại các sự kiện học thuật để làm quen với cả bạn bè lẫn giáo sư trong và ngoài nước. Ngay cả khi bạn chỉ lắng nghe, tham dự một buổi seminar và đặt một câu hỏi thông minh sau phần trình bày cũng đã là một bước networking ý nghĩa. Ở Việt Nam cũng có rất nhiều seminar/webinar tổ chức free cho các bạn tham gia đấy !

Nghệ thuật tiếp cận … Giáo Sư

Đây là phần mà nhiều bạn trẻ vấp phải nhiều nhất vì không biết bắt đầu từ đâu. Bí quyết là hãy làm… background check về giáo sư mà bạn thích, đi event thì tham dự bài trình bày của vị giáo sư mà bạn muốn kết nối, lắng nghe kỹ, và tiếp cận họ sau phần thuyết trình với một câu hỏi thực sự liên quan đến nội dung vừa trình bày. Điều này chứng minh bạn đã chuẩn bị và quan tâm thực sự, không chỉ đến xin danh thiếp. Nếu muốn sắp xếp một cuộc gặp ngắn, hãy đề xuất ngay từ đầu là bạn chỉ cần 10 đến 15 phút, hoàn toàn theo lịch của họ. Sự tôn trọng thời gian của người khác luôn ghi điểm mạnh trong môi trường học thuật. Cold email cũng có thể work, nhưng honestly Tứng thấy không mạnh bằng face-2-face contact. Phần này, well, có lẽ cần cả một bài viết riêng cho nó. Tứng có một vài trick về networking với giáo sư có kể trong youtube, các bạn xem thêm nhé.

Những sai lầm cần tránh

Networking sai cách còn tệ hơn không networking. Một vài lỗi phổ biến mà người làm khoa học hay mắc phải:

• Chỉ liên lạc khi cần: Nếu bạn chỉ nhớ đến ai đó khi muốn xin việc hay xin reference, mối quan hệ đó sẽ rất mong manh nhe… Quan hệ phải là 2 chiều :).

• Nói quá nhiều về bản thân: Nhiều nhà nghiên cứu trẻ mắc lỗi biến buổi gặp gỡ thành màn “quảng cáo” bản thân thay vì lắng nghe và tìm điểm chung.

• Trải quá rộng mà lại quá mỏng: Quen biết quá nhiều người nhưng không ai thực sự hiểu bạn là ai thì cũng rất khó để họ đặt niềm tin. Quy tắc 80/20, 80% cơ hội thực sự đến từ 20% các mối quan hệ chất lượng nhất

• Quên follow up: Một cuộc gặp tốt nhưng sau đó im lặng hoàn toàn thì cũng như không. Một email ngắn cảm ơn, hay một lần chia sẻ bài báo liên quan, đủ để duy trì sợi dây kết nối

Networking không phải là kỹ năng bẩm sinh mà ai cũng có ngay, nhưng hoàn toàn có thể rèn luyện được theo thời gian:

• Chuẩn bị một cái elevator pitch để tự giới thiệu bản thân trong … < 3 phút

• Thân thiện sẽ ghi đc điểm, đây là chìa khóa của mọi kết nối, 100% sure nhe

• Chất lượng quan trọng hơn số lượng, quen nhiều người nhưng không ai hiểu rõ về bạn thì rất khó để ai đặt niềm tin vào bạn

• Đừng tự ti, đa số các giáo sư và nhà nghiên cứu kỳ cựu đều rất vui khi được hỏi về công việc của họ, vì đó là điều họ đam mê nhất

• Bắt đầu càng sớm càng tốt, dù đang là cử nhân, thạc sĩ hay tiến sĩ, mạng lưới quan hệ xây từ hôm nay sẽ là nền tảng vững chắc cho ngày mai

Fun fact: Mình tin các nhà khoa học có mạng lưới đa dạng, tức là kết nối với người thuộc nhiều ngành khác nhau chứ không chỉ trong chuyên ngành hẹp của mình, thường có xu hướng tạo ra các ý tưởng đột phá hơn. Lý do đơn giản là sự giao thoa giữa các lĩnh vực chính là nơi những khám phá thực sự thú vị thường xảy ra. Vậy lần tới tại hội thảo, đừng chỉ ngồi với người cùng phòng lab nhé!

Mochi [1] turned three slow circles on the rug before settling into a tight curl near the heater. He does this every evening, and every evening it kinda … works. He is asleep within two minutes, completely untroubled by anything he did or did not accomplish during the day…

I was sitting at the kitchen table with my laptop open, reading a paper that a researcher in my field had published several months earlier. Scarlett was at the other end of the table doing her homework, announcing each answer aloud before writing it down as if the act of saying it made it more correct. Kartika was moving through the kitchen with the efficient noise of someone doing four things while mentally planning a fifth.

The paper I was reading was presented in a very careful fashion. The findings were genuinely interesting. I knew from a recent conference that the person who wrote it had spent the better part of three years on the underlying work. But reading it was an effort that paid back less than it cost. Dense where it should have been clear. Vague where it should have been specific. Structured as if the reader already knew the answer and was simply checking the methodology. I read it twice, found what I needed, and thought about the two or three years that had gone into producing something that most of the people who might benefit from it would never get through.

That gap, the gap between the work done and the work received is what this book is about.

I have spent more than twelve years doing research, first as a bachelor, master, PhD student, then as a short-term postdoc, and now as a scientist at an agricultural research institution in Melbourne where I use genomics, computational methods to study animal breeding. Over that time I have published papers, applied for grants, given talks at conferences where I was the only person in the room who cared about my specific question, sat through seminars where extraordinary science was communicated so poorly that the audience left knowing less than they should have, and supervised students who were far more capable than their ability to communicate their work suggested.

Unfortunately, none of my previous training prepared me for any of it.

Why ? My PhD program taught me to design experiments, analyse data, and interpret results with appropriate caution. It did not teach me to write a paper that another scientist would want to read rather than have to read. It did not teach me to give a talk that made a stranger care about a question they had never thought about before. It did not teach me how to tell a supervisor honestly that an experiment was failing, how to write a grant proposal that spoke to someone who controlled a budget but did not share my scientific framework, or how to build the kind of presence in a field that means your work reaches people rather than sitting in a journal waiting for them to find it.

I learned all of those things slowly, through failure, observation, and the occasional piece of advice from someone who happened to say the right thing at the right time.

“Xong PhD rồi, anh có hối tiếc điều gì không ?”

Câu hỏi ấy nghe có vẻ nhẹ nhàng he, nhưng mà nó thật ra chạm … đúng vào một góc rất sâu của mình. Ngẫm nghĩ lại, cuộc đời nghiên cứu là nơi người ta thường chỉ thấy ánh sáng của tri thức, trong khi lại ít khi nhìn thấy phần mỏi mệt, hoang mang và những điều phải đánh đổi phía sau nó.

Nếu trả lời thật lòng, mình nghĩ hối tiếc trong PhD thường nằm ở cách người ta bước vào nó, sống trong nó, và (đôi khi) đánh mất chính mình ở giữa hành trình. May quá, vế cuối cùng … không áp dụng với mình haha !

Có một sự thật như vầy: PhD không chỉ là một bậc học cao hơn, với bậc PhD bạn thực sự sống cùng với nghiên cứu, ăn nghiên cứu, ngủ nghiên cứu, nghiên cứu một mình, nghiên cứu … nhiều mình và muôn vàn thứ chông gai khác nhau mà một trăm bài viết cũng không thể kể hết… Suốt nhiều năm, bạn phải làm quen với việc câu trả lời luôn lẩn tránh bạn, kết quả không phải lúc nào cũng đúng như bạn mong muốn, và mọi thứ dù là quan trọng hay không thường chả bao giờ rõ ràng trắng đen.

Thông thường, bạn bắt đầu bằng sự háo hức, nhưng rồi rất nhanh sau đó, bạn chợt nhận ra rằng nghiên cứu không giống những gì ta tưởng tượng, không phải là những khuôn mặt sáng bừng, những phòng lab sáng choang, không phải là những chuyến bay, những hội nghị tầm cỡ, những phát minh thay đổi thế giới. PhD không chỉ đỏn thuần là phải đọc nhiều hơn, viết nhiều hơn, nghĩ sâu hơn. Nó còn là chuỗi những ngày ngồi một mình trước màn hình, thấy đầu óc chai sạn đi, thấy sự nghiệp mình lẹt đẹt hơn người khác, thấy những người xung quanh đang đi tiếp trong khi mình vẫn mắc kẹt ở một/một vài câu hỏi ngồi mãi vẫn chưa giải xong….

Điều đáng tiếc nhất, có lẽ là việc rất nhiều người bước vào PhD với niềm tin rằng chỉ cần đủ cố gắng thì mọi thứ sẽ OK. Nhưng ngặt nỗi, các bạn mình ạ, học thuật không vận hành như một bài toán 1 + 1 = 2. Có những môi trường tốt, có những người hướng dẫn nâng đỡ, nhưng cũng có những nơi mà sự mập mờ, cạnh tranh, cô đơn và áp lực thành tích âm thầm bào mòn người trẻ từng chút một. Có người không hối tiếc vì nghiên cứu, mà hối tiếc vì đã quá lâu mới dám thừa nhận mình đang kiệt sức. Có người hối tiếc vì đã coi sự chịu đựng là một đức tính tốt, để rồi đánh mất cả giấc ngủ, sức khỏe, và những mối quan hệ đáng lẽ phải được giữ gìn.

Một góc khuất khác là cảm giác phải luôn tỏ ra mình ổn, yo, mình đang học PhD, cool ngầu, mình phải cảm thấy OK. Chúng ta đều được học cách trình bày kết quả thật chắc chắn, cách bảo vệ luận điểm thật gọn ghẽ, nhưng hiếm khi được học cách thừa nhận rằng mình đang sợ, đang mệt, đang không biết đi tiếp thế nào. Và chính chỗ này mới là nơi dễ sinh ra hối tiếc nhất. Nhiều người không rời khỏi PhD vì thiếu năng lực, không phải đâu. Họ chỉ… mệt quá rồi họ từ bỏ thôi àh.

Nhưng nói vậy không có nghĩa PhD chỉ toàn là mỏi với mệt. Nó cũng có những vẻ đẹp rất riêng, thứ vẻ đẹp đến từ việc được theo đuổi một câu hỏi đến tận cùng, được chạm vào những điều chưa ai biết, được nhìn thấy mình lớn lên trong chính quá trình va chạm với giới hạn của bản thân. Chỉ có một điều là để đi qua được chặng đường đẹp đẽ đó, người ta thường phải học cách đối diện với mảng tối rất thật của chuyến hành trình này. Và nếu có một điều mình muốn nhắn với những ai đang học PhD, thì có lẽ đó là: đừng đợi đến khi bạn cảm thấy kiệt sức mới cho phép mình dừng lại, đừng đợi đến khi mọi thứ vỡ vụn ra rồi mới đi tìm hỗ trợ, và đừng quên rằng một luận án dù là xong hay không xong thì đều không quyết định toàn bộ giá trị của một con người bạn. Hãy nhớ, bạn không cô đơn trên chuyến hành trình ấy.

PhD, rốt cuộc, không chỉ đơn giản là chuyện chúng ta quanh quẩn với khoa học & cố gắng tạo ra tri thức mới. Nó còn là một phép thử âm thầm về cách ta tập sống với cô đơn, với áp lực, với kỳ vọng, và với chính những phần mong manh nhất của cuộc đời mình. PhD, có lẽ với bản thân mình là một hành trình tìm đến giới hạn của bản thân, một hành trình rất dài và lắm sương mờ, có những hối tiếc không thể xóa đi, nhưng cũng có những điều chỉ khi đi qua rồi ta mới hiểu.

Theo ý Tứng, dưới đây là lộ trình 8 bước,

Một bài báo nghiên cứu chuẩn thường có: Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, References.​

Hiểu rõ từng phần để biết cần thông tin gì thì tới đúng chỗ, không phải lúc nào cũng cày từ đầu tới cuối nhe

• Abstract: 1 cái “tổng quan” nhất về nghiên cứu, tất cả mọi thứ như câu hỏi, cách làm, kết quả chính, ý nghĩa đều nằm hết ở đây

• Introduction: bối cảnh, knowledge gaps, mục tiêu nghiên cứu.

• Methods: nghiên cứu được tiến hành trên đối tượng nào, đo/thu gì, phân tích ra sao.

• Results: số liệu, bảng, hình, phần phân tích chủ đạo của bài.

• Discussion: tác giả tự giải thích, so sánh với nghiên cứu trước, so sánh ABC XYZ.

• References: trích dẫn, chỗ truy xuất lại thông tin, dễ hỉu ha.

Các bạn có thể tham khảo thêm hình minh họa dưới đây

• Mới bước vào lĩnh vực: tập trung Introduction và Discussion để hiểu bức tranh chung, từ khóa, khái niệm chính.

• Muốn học kĩ thuật: đọc kĩ Methods (và phần phụ lục nếu có) xem họ làm từng bước như thế nào.

• Theo dõi một nhóm/tác giả: lướt toàn bài để xem nghiên cứu mới này nối vào “mạch truyện” trước đó ra sao.

• Cần đánh giá chất lượng: soi thiết kế nghiên cứu, cỡ mẫu, cách xử lí dữ liệu, cách tác giả diễn giải kết quả.

Xác định mục đích trước, bạn sẽ biết phần nào đọc kĩ, phần nào chỉ cần lướt.

Lần này chỉ cần nắm ý, không cần hiểu hết chi tiết.

• Đọc tiêu đề và Abstract: câu hỏi chính, cách tiếp cận, kết quả nổi bật.

• Xem nhanh các đề mục lớn: hình dung cấu trúc bài, đoạn nào nói chuyện gì.

• Lướt Introduction: tìm câu “khoảng trống kiến thức” và mục tiêu nghiên cứu.

• Xem figures và tables: nhìn trục, nhóm so sánh, xu hướng; đoán tác giả muốn chứng minh gì. Này rất quan trọng & xứng đáng có 1 bài riêng viết cho nó.

• Đọc lướt phần đầu và cuối Discussion: họ rút ra kết luận gì từ dữ liệu.

Sau đó, thử tóm tắt bài bằng 1–2 câu của chính bạn. Nếu nói được trôi chảy, là lần đọc 1 đã đạt.

Lần này mới đọc kĩ từ đầu đến cuối, vừa đọc vừa ghi chép.

• Tập ghi chú: đừng chỉ tô màu, tô là quên đấy, hãy ghi câu hỏi, nhận xét, ý tưởng bên lề.

• Xem kỹ Methods: thiết kế thí nghiệm có hợp câu hỏi không, cỡ mẫu có đủ, cách chọn mẫu/nhóm chứng/thống kê có ổn ko ? Có flaw ko ? Thuật toán ra sao ?

• Xem kỹ Results: họ báo cáo gì (p, khoảng tin cậy, độ lớn hiệu ứng), figure có vẽ đẹp quá mức cần thiết không. Đẹp thì lụm dìa =))

• Xem kỹ Discussion: họ có tự nhận rõ hạn chế không, có nói quá mức cần thiết so với dữ liệu không.

Cuối cùng, hãy ráng tự viết lại một bản tóm tắt ngắn theo khung:

Bối cảnh – Câu hỏi – Cách làm – Kết quả chính – Hạn chế – Ý tưởng tiếp theo

Bài đã đăng != sự thật

Khi đọc, thử tự hỏi:

• Có cách giải thích nào khác cho bộ dữ liệu này không?

• Nếu mình thiết kế lại, mình sẽ đổi điểm nào trước?

• Có chỗ nào tác giả suy diễn quá xa, nhất là khi nói tới ứng dụng lâm sàng, chính sách, hay “cách mạng hóa lĩnh vực”?

• Funding, lợi ích, hoặc thiên kiến cá nhân có thể ảnh hưởng tới câu hỏi và kết luận không?

Đọc một mình mãi cũng quải ha, để rèn luyện thêm, hãy:

• Tham gia Journal club: mỗi tuần một bài, thay phiên nhau trình bày; muốn không “quê” thì buộc phải đọc và hiểu cho ra hồn. Tứng có recommend cho đội BioScience nhóm của IBSG & Cộng Đồng Y sinh (google please)

• Trao đổi online: viết vài dòng nhận xét, câu hỏi trên Threads, Twitter, Discord… với người trong ngành, đôi khi là chính tác giả.

• Giải thích lại cho người khác: bạn cùng lab, sinh viên, hoặc người ngoài ngành, chỗ nào bạn không giải thích nổi là chỗ bạn chưa hiểu kĩ.

Đọc xong là phải biết đặt bài đó vào “bản đồ” kiến thức của mình.

• Nó xác nhận, bổ sung hay phản bác kết quả nào trước đó?

• Nó dùng chung phương pháp/dataset với bài nào bạn biết không?

• Nếu gộp nó vào phần nào trong bài tổng quan bạn đang viết, nó nằm ở đoạn nào?

Dùng phần mềm quản lí tài liệu (Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley…), mindmap, 2nd brain và gắn nhãn theo chủ đề, phương pháp, đối tượng…

Mục tiêu cuối cùng không phải là “đã đọc n bài”, mà là:

• Áp dụng phương pháp hoặc cách phân tích vào dữ liệu của bạn (sau khi hiểu rõ nguyên lí).

• Dùng bài làm nền cho đề cương nghiên cứu mới: đổi quần thể, đổi thang đo, đổi bối cảnh ứng dụng.

• Ghi lại thành note/blog/bài viết tiếng Việt cho cộng đồng, củng cố hiểu biết của bạn và giúp người khác.

• Dùng nó để kiểm tra lại giả thuyết bạn đang theo đuổi: củng cố hay tạo ra mâu thuẫn, trong một khía cạnh nào đó cả hai điều này đều vô cùng hữu ích á.

Tên ebook, như mình có giới thiệu từ trước là Mochi doesn’t care about your H-index. Yeah, tên ebook vậy đó, ebook Tứng viết, Tứng có quyền nhe ;)

Ebook này, là một cuốn “nhật ký” của mình, viết tặng những nhà khoa học làm một tỉ việc tốt nhưng gần như không ai biết đến, về cách viết bài báo người ta thực sự muốn đọc thay vì chỉ muốn cite cho xong, về cách trình bày mà không cả khán phòng ngáp dài ngáp ngắn, và cách xây dựng mối quan hệ trong môi trường nghiên cứu (mà không ai từng dạy mình cả)

Anh Tứng, Ebook dài cỡ nào ? Tạm thời thì có mười sáu (16) chương - có thể gia giảm, từ grant writing đến elevator pitch đến nghệ thuật trò chuyện với supervisor, và dĩ nhiên có mình, Tika, Scarlett & Mochi trong đó, vì sao lại không ;)

Ebook này sẽ được xuất bản trên một section riêng & là một món quà mình dành tặng trước tiên cho paid subs của mình (yes, có một vài bạn đã & đang donate cho mình viết bài - nếu bạn đã từng sub cho Tứng, check inbox nhe vì Tứng mới gửi quà cho các bạn đấy). Không có sau đó, tất cả những điều mà bạn đã trải qua, thế giới ngoài kia vẫn xoay, thế thái nhân tình vẫn đảo điên, hoàn toàn không biết bạn vừa làm gì.

Buồn thay, đây là thực tế thầm lặng của phần lớn nhà khoa học làm nghiên cứu.

Vấn đề mình thấy không nằm ở chất lượng nghiên cứu. Nhiều công trình đạt chuẩn quốc tế nhưng vẫn ... sủi tăm nhiều năm sau khi xuất bản, không phải vì chúng thiếu giá trị, mà đơn giản vì chúng được viết cho một nhóm độc giả hẹp, vô cùng chuyên biệt, bằng một loại ngôn ngữ mà người không phải trong ngành gần như không thể tiếp cận (hello genomics). Thiệt mà, nếu bạn đã từng viết một bài báo khoa học, bạn sẽ thấy một bài báo khoa học điển hình được viết cho đồng nghiệp trong cùng chuyên ngành, không phải cho người nông dân muốn hiểu biến đổi khí hậu, không phải cho người mẹ đang lo lắng về một loại thuốc mới, và chắc chắn không phải cho nhà hoạch định chính sách cần đưa ra quyết định vào quý sau.

Mình nghĩ thế này:

“Nếu không ai hiểu, thì không ai tin, và nếu không ai tin, thì mọi nỗ lực nghiên cứu để cải thiện cuộc sống đều trở nên vô nghĩa.”

Thế nên nó dẫn đến một chuyện :”Khoa học nên được truyền đạt như thế nào, thông qua truyền thông chẳng hạn ?”

Ừ, thiệt, khi khoa học đc làm truyền thông (Science commmunication) đúng cách, nó có thể tạo ra rất nhiều tác động lan tỏa theo những hướng không ai dự đoán trước. Một công trình được truyền thông quan tâm không chỉ đến tay công chúng mà còn mở ra cơ hội hợp tác quốc tế, thu hút tài trợ, và thậm chí kéo theo sự chú ý đến những nghiên cứu liên quan đang bị bỏ quên. Nghiên cứu nên là điểm xuất phát của một cuộc trò chuyện lớn hơn, từ nhiều bên liên quan hơn.

Mình thấy điều này đặt ra một trách nhiệm không nhỏ cho các trường đại học và viện nghiên cứu. Đào tạo kỹ năng kể chuyện khoa học cần được đưa vào chương trình từ bậc thạc sĩ đổ lên, không phải như một môn học phụ, mà như một năng lực cốt lõi của nhà nghiên cứu hiện đại.

Khoa học không tự nhiên đến với công chúng, nó cần được dẫn đường bởi chính những người tạo ra nó, mình nghĩ vậy.

Tứng muốn làm một cái gì đó cho khoa học, và Tứng nghĩ Communication for Scientist là một thứ mình muốn đào sâu hơn nữa.

Tứng

Hôm trước lúc xem Youtube, mình có đc bà xã cho xem video của một cô youtuber người Nhật hay Hàn gì đó. Cô ấy nhắn trong đoạn clip rằng thực ra cô ấy không thật sự hạnh phúc, chỉ là cô ấy cố tìm kiếm những vụn vặt giản đơn trong đời sống hằng ngày rồi lấy đó làm niềm vui. Mình thấy thật chính xác, những niềm vui cỏn con dường như ấy có tác dụng cộng gộp lại để tạo nên một tác dụng phi thường và thay đổi tính cách con người. Âu cũng giống như cái cách mà the infinitesimal effect của rất nhiều gene ảnh hưởng lên chiều cao hay cân nặng của con người vậy.

Có lẽ, trong guồng quay của sự hối hả,của áp lực phải vươn lên trong cuộc sống bẽ bàng, đôi khi con người ta quên đi những niềm vui có phần bé nhỏ ấy. Những mảnh ghép con con tạo nên cái gọi là hạnh phúc của cuộc đời, là ánh mắt, là nụ cười, là tiếng nói của những người xung quanh ta rất đỗi thân thuộc. Có khi đơn giản chỉ như là miếng bánh ăn vội, là bữa cơm còn đủ đầy cha mẹ, là những lần chạy kịp chuyến xe bus đêm cuối ngày.

Con người ta, trong thời đại này có lẽ phải nhắm mắt đưa tay, phải chạy theo những phù phiếm xa hoa của nhà cửa, xe cộ, của những xúng xa xúng xính được xem như “chuẩn mực xã hội”. Những gì họ dành cho nhau chỉ là những sự ganh đua, tranh giành, những mánh mung vụ lợi, những cay cú, đố kị của cuộc đời.

Ừ, đôi khi câu trả lời cho tất cả thật ra quá đỗi đơn giản. Tự pha một tách cà phê, nghe một đoạn concerto êm ái, tĩnh lặng để ngẫm nghĩ lại về con người,về cuộc đời quanh ta. Và để ngẫm được rằng, cuộc đời này vẫn còn quá nhiều điều nhỏ nhặt mà thật dễ thương.
